Shrimp and Grits

Have you ever had shrimp and grits? It is a very popular dish here in the Low Country. When my mother and friend were visiting me, I made it for them.

Here is the recipe that I used:

For Grits:
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 teas. salt
3/4 cup Palmetto Farms Grits
1 cup cheddar cheese

For Shrimp Topping:

1 cup diced bacon
1/2 cup thinly sliced onion
2 teas. hot pepper sauce
Grated cheese for garnish
1 lb. medium peeled shrimp
1 cup thinly sliced green bell pepper
sliced green onions for garnish

For grits: Bring chicken broth and milk to a boil. Stir in grits and salt, return to boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Cook 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in cheese. Keep warm.

For shrimp topping: Cook bacon in skillet till crisp. Remove bacon all all but 2 tablespoons of fat. Add peppers and onions. Cook till tender. Add shrimp and cook till pink. Return bacon, add hot pepper sauce. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Serve shrimp mixture over warm grits. Garnish with green onions and cheese.

Makes 6 servings.

It is a quick meal to make and also delicious! I love the fact that I can buy local shrimp off the boats that come in from the local waters!

  4. Grits are one of my favorite things to eat. I make shrimp and grits too, only a bit different than yours, I add mushrooms too. But yours sounds good too! I will post my recipe sometime.

  5. The shrimp and grits look really good. I love steamed cold shrimp and I love grits but I just can't get myself to want to mix the two.

  8. No wonder I love reading your blog! You bring all the wonders of the coast to my doorstep. I SO want to make this recipe. I love shrimp and grits and your recipe looks great. When I read your blog, it's like I've gone to the coast for vacation.

I have never liked grits so for me any shrimp and grits recipe are just a waste of good shrimp! To be honest grits do not like me - I am allergic to corn, but I am sure others will love this dish. Welcome to the beautiful Palmetto state!
