Memorial Day 2014

Well how was your long extended weekend?  Mine was great!  Today was a more relaxing day as we originally were going to see a State Championship in Savannah, however, the weather did not behave and the game was delayed for over three hours.  So we decided not to go and ended up selling our tickets there at the field!  Since we were close to Fresh Market (one of my favorite grocery stores) we did some shopping there and went to a local strip mall with some of my favorite stores.....Williams-Sonoma, Talbott's, and Coldwater Creek!  I did end up buying some lightweight tees for my summer wardrobe and almost bought a real cute Maxi dress but I just wasn't sold on it!  So I am still looking for that favorite Maxi!

We came home and cooked some hamburgers outside along with some broccoli salad that I made which is one of my favorites for picnics!

I also did a little decorating for Memorial Day on my front porch!  Didn't too much as I don't want to pull out everything out from storage since I have my home for sale and I have to keep everything PERFECT!

The blue hydrangeas were picked from my back yard.....the red white and blue bunting was a purchase from World Market.  I already had the blue/white ticking pillow......

I planted the Portulaca in the rusty watering can that I bought at Marigolds in Summerville, SC.  (One of my favorite stores).   I also wrapped the red white and blue bunting around the whiskey barrel.

So what did you do over your long weekend?

Thanks for your visit!

Some Fun in Chapel Hill, Durham and Apex, NC

We now have our home on the market and are considering moving to North Carolina.  Since we are not sure on what area in NC, we decided to visit Chapel Hill, Apex and Durham.

I have been to Raleigh Durham before when I attended a conference with a pharmaceutical company that I had worked for.

It was nice to return and we stayed at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.  It is a wonderful hotel adjacent to Duke University.  More information on Washington Duke Inn can be found here.

The weather was just perfect on our trip so we dined outside quite often.

I enjoyed their roasted corn chowder with shrimp for lunch and it was fabulous!

I even enjoyed a Cape Cod on the terrace overlooking their golf course.....

The lobby was so beautiful and their flower centerpiece was gorgeous!!!

We also walked around the campus of Duke University!

Then we spent some time in Chapel Hill which was also a beautiful area and home of UNC - Tarheels.

We dined at at a restaurant called Top of the Hill.....(a brewery and restaurant and we had roof top seating....).

I ordered the Wild Mushroom Grit Cakes with shrimp which were to die for!!!!

Sutton's Drug Store - this is an old fashioned drug store in Chapel Hill and has been in business since 1923.  The store is adorned with UNC memorabilia and also has a counter and grill which breakfast and lunch is served.  We met several friendly locals that shared a lot of information to us about the area.

Apex is a town in Wake County and a suburb of Raleigh.  We also gathered real estate information here along with some shopping.  I loved the town feel and it actually reminded me a little of Beaufort, SC.

Below are a couple of homes in the Apex historic area.  I love them and just wish I would have taken more photos of the homes in the areas that I visited.

We really enjoyed visiting these three cities in North Carolina.  Met a lot of nice people and gathered some real estate information on all of the areas.

Now our next visit in about a month will be the Raleigh area and suburbs.

Brown Butter Poundcake

While going through some of my old recipes, I pulled out one of my favorites for my Brown Butter Poundcake.  It has always been a winner within my family.

  • Recipe:

  • 2 1/4 sticks (9 oz) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour(not self-rising; sift before measuring)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F with a rack in the middle. Butter and lightly flour an 8-1/2 by 41/2-inch loaf pan.

Heat butter in a 10-inch heavy skillet over medium heat until milk solids on bottom are dark brown. Stir while the butter is melting to encourage the browning.
Transfer to a shallow bowl and chill in freezer until just congealed, about 15 minutes.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat together the chilled brown butter and sugars with an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. At low speed, mix in the flour mixture until just incorporated.
Transfer batter to pan, smoothing top, then tap pan on counter to settle batter. Bake until golden-brown and a wooden pick inserted into center comes out clean, 1 to 11/4 hours. Cool in pan 30 minutes, then invert cake onto a rack and cool completely, right side up, 1 hour.

I love serving it with fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream but I only had blueberries.

Bon Appetit!
