My Asparagus Fern

Do you have a favorite plant that you love?  I do and it is the Asparagus Fern.  No it is not an edible plant but new growth on this plant resembles tiny spears of asparagus.  They are very easy to grown and versatile.

Asparagus ferns are very adaptable and will grow in full sun to shade.  I move mine around quite often and for now I have it on my wrought iron patio table.  Mine is doing very well where it is and is shaded by a Water Oak tree in my back yard for the warmer months.  When it gets cool outside, I can bring inside and place near any window for morning sun.

I bought my fern at a local nursery and replanted it in one of my favorite urns.

I also wanted to take a photo of my fern near my garage on my "favorite blue" bistro chair.

Asparagus ferns will grow in nearly any soil and will thrive in both moist and dry conditions. They flourish in the hottest summer heat.   You can also trim them in the spring for abundance in growth.

Asparagus ferns are among the most drought-tolerant plants we use in containers, which is a real advantage since containers can dry out so quickly. The secret to their drought tolerance is in the white tuberous structures attached to their roots. These structures store water to carry the plant through times of drought. You may see them when transplanting or repotting the plants.

I have also see Asparagus ferns in pots with other assorted plants, landscaping and even hanging pots on a porch.

So what is your favorite house plant?

  1. I too luv the asparagus fern. I have 2. One on the front garden, that one is about 4 feet in diameter. The other in the back garden that one is a bit smaller, about 2.5 feet in diameter. The one I had in a hanging pot did not survive the freezes this winter :(
Mine have little white flowers at the moment that will turn into little green berries in a little bit.
Yours is so pretty in it's urn.
    Hugs, Gee

  2. Love these too. I don't have one right now but I had one for years. It got really old. I don't remember what happened to it but it seems to me when it was old it got some red berries on it if I remember correctly.

  3. I like asparagus fern too. They are so fun and easy. They also make your deck or entry so pretty with the green. Very cute photos today.
I also like geraniums. Dark Red and Dark Pink are my favorite color of geraniums.

  4. Asparagus ferns are fun to have, but can turn yellow I had that happen to mine and then it dropped tiny like pine needles. No green thumb here LOL.
I do love a orchid plant.
    Have a sweet day, Elizabeth

  5. I like these and the Boston ferns...when mine are outside, they do great..the minute I bring them inside, they turn yellow and die. :(

  6. Kelly, I love Asparagus Ferns also. One of our local nurseries sells small ones for $1.25 each every Spring. I buy an entire flat and throw them in all of my planters. They grow very nicely like you say. I don't really have a lot of indoor plants, but I like bringing my Rosemary in for the Winter. Thanks for sharing your beautiful fern with SYC.
