Saxapahaw General Store in North Carolina

My husband recently reviewed an article in the New York Times, see here in North Carolina about a small town of Saxapahaw.  It is not far from where we are currently living.

The town of Saxapahaw is located a few miles west of Chapel Hill in a rural area!  It was actually a mill town built around the community's cotton mill along the Hall River.  The first mill was built back in 1844 but demolished for a brick structure.  The current standing building was owned and operated until 1994 by Dixie Yarns until a tornado damaged the building and the company never resumed for business. In 2006, renovations were made and completed and now house condominiums.

In the former dye room of the mill is now the Haw River Ballroom which hosts interesting music events throughout the year.  Inside the building it is beautifully restored and renovated with a industrial vibe.  I can't wait to go back to see a concert there!

There is also a small coffee shop in the same building and a gastropub.  Coming this fall, Hall River Brewery will be opening.  My husband loves craft beer and enjoys trying out the craft beers here in NC since there are so many good ones.

I loved the different color of chairs in this room on the upper level near coffee house.  I guess if you are attending a concert here you can also sit here and see the performance on the lower level with a good view.

White enjoying our coffee outside, our view was of the Haw River.....

The general store and gas station was the first establishment in this small town.  We had lunch there and so glad we did.  My husband had the bahn mi and I had the pork carnita. They both were perfect. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily and inside and outside seating is available..  The store also sells fresh, organic vegetables and fruits, cheeses and organic meats from local farmers.  You can even find your everyday necessity items.

You can even purchase a handcrafted broom made by local artisans.

I am looking forward to visiting this cute, quaint village again sometime soon!

  1. looks like a fun place to shop. I need one of those brooms:)

  2. I love places like this! Can't wait for you to go back to a concert.

  3. I love the name Saxapahaw - it has an important ring to it.
Lunch and the coffee shop and view add to a perfect day
